7. The Natural not only offers a detailed rendering of the world of baseball; it also
illustrates the business aspect of professional sports. How is the relationship
between pro sports and business characterized in this film? What about the rela-
tionship between pro sports and gambling? Do you think that either of these rela-
tionships would be characterized differently if the story was being told today?
I do not think so. People, I think, have just gotten more greedy. People are always looking for ways to make more money and I am sure people in the sports industries gamble on if the teams will win or lose all the time. It sad but true. I believe most people are good but you always have a few rotten apples. Maybe not to the extent in The Natural but I'm sure there are some. Pro sports are a business now. I do not see them as anything else. They have all these guys that are getting paid millions for what they do best. People have described football players as being like the gladiators and that was a business to. If it was not this it would be something else and this is not that bad compared to what gladiators were. So I guess we will have to put up with the corruption, which there will always be in anything, but we will just have to hope for the best.
